OTTIE RENO, Pike County, Ohio

Organizer: Ottie W. Reno of Lucasville, Ohio, is the author of several full-length books on the sport of horseshoe pitching.  These books have worldwide circulation and provide resource material for local clubs, individual pitchers, and the media.  Donating his experience as a lawyer and judge, Ottie served nineteen years as legal advisor for the NHPA for which he received a special NHPA award in 1977.  He has been honored as an organizer in three different charters, Alabama, Kentucky, and Ohio.  He held an office in the NHPA continuously for over twenty years and received the Stokes Memorial Award in 1964. 

 

He has pitched exhibitions at fairs, schools, penitentiaries, and amusement parks and was one of five Americans who introduced the sport of horseshoe pitching in the Republic of South Africa in 1972.  Ottie was Alabama State Champion from 1963 to 1977 winning the Alabama State title 15 times.  Ottie designed and managed the manufacturing of the Reno pitching shoe.  Ottie passed away on February 11th, 2019, at the age of 89.
