Promoter: Lucille Hopkins is known as the ‘First Lady of
Horseshoes’ in Iowa. Although
she has never thrown a shoe in competition, she has given dedicated service to
the sport and its betterment. She
was drawn to the sport as her husband began pitching in the 1940’s. In 1948 she kept the results and final
statistics for a tournament in Blakesburg and that led to three more
tournaments in Missouri and the fair tournament at Davenport. In 1958, she was named Superintendent of
the prestigious Iowa State Tournament held at the Iowa State Fair. Lucille served several terms as NHPA
Vice President, being initially elected in 1962.
