WINNIE WINETROUT, Lummi Island, Washington

Player-Organizer: Francis “Winnie” Winetrout was a charter member of the Washington State Association in 1927, at age 22, and pitched horseshoes for over 50 years.  He won the World Men’s Intermediate Championship in 1968 pitching 72.8% ringers and again in 1969.  In 1969 he finished in second place at the Washington State Tournament.  His promotion efforts highlighted his career.  He established the first state association newsletter and originated the Winter Classic Open which was later renamed the Winetrout Winter Open Classic.  He sponsored State Junior Champions to attend World Tournaments.  He served on the NHPA Hall of Fame Committee.  Winnie was recipient of the President’s Award in 1989 and received the Stokes Memorial Award in 1993.  He passed away in 2005 at age 100.
