Organizer: Bernard Herfurth was born June 1, 1911, and won his first horseshoe tournament at age 14, pitching from 40 feet. He won the Western Massachusetts Championship in 1927 and again in 1977. He won the Massachusetts State Championship three times; 1973, 1974, 1976. Bernard’s service to the NHPA was serving as Hall of Fame Chairman for over 10 years from 1972 to 1985. He was recipient of the Stokes Memorial Award in 1975. Bernard passed away October 23, 2002, at age 91.
