A 15-year-old school boy who became interested in horseshoe pitching and won the National Tournament held in St. Petersburg, Fla., Feb. 19-24, 1923, from a field of 29 other contestants, including Davis, Jackson and Lundin and was given a cash prize of $500, and a diamond-studded world's championship gold medal. His parents thought his education was of more importance than horseshoe pitching honor so he did not compete in a National tournament again until the one held in St. Petersburg, Fla.., February 20 to March 1, 1928.
